A Body of Peace

Meditation Experiment #10: Prepare to Meditate

When I first began meditating, I thought I was ready. I had practiced Iyengar yoga for years, studied alignment, and built a strong foundation. But sitting still for longer than ten minutes revealed a different story. My hips ached, my knees barked, and my back stiffened like a board. The discomfort didn’t feel noble—it felt like an obstacle.

Then I discovered Yin Yoga. Or maybe it discovered me. By holding postures like the ones in this week’s Meditation Experiment— Butterfly, Sphinx, and Dragon—I began to feel my body differently. And over time, something shifted. My hips softened. My spine unwound. And most important of all, sitting became less of a battle and more of a homecoming.
