Welcome to From Scratch

A space for inquiry, practice, and reflection—an evolving journal and practice lab for Yin Yoga, meditation, and embodied wisdom in the midst of life’s uncertainties.

Dear Reader,

I’m Josh Summers — a practitioner, writer, and contemplative in recovery. I’ve spent the past two decades immersed in Yin Yoga, Buddhist meditation, and Chinese Medicine, teaching and practicing these disciplines while exploring how they support healing, clarity, and transformation in the messiness of real life.

And yet, despite all my years of practice, life has a way of humbling you. Recently, personal upheavals led me to question everything — the structures I built, the teachings I shared, the assumptions I carried. The foundation I once thought was solid— personally, professionally, and spiritually — shifted beneath me.

And so, I return to practice. From scratch.

This space is my lab. It’s where I refine and reimagine practice — not from the standpoint of someone with all the answers, but as someone committed to the process of inquiry. I write to explore, integrate, and test what holds up under the weight of lived experience.

If you’ve ever questioned your own practice… if you’ve found yourself disillusioned with spiritual clichés… if you’re drawn to depth over performance, process over perfection — then you might find something useful here.

Here, I share:

🔹 Essays & Reflections – Explorations of Yin Yoga, meditation, and Chinese Medicine in the context of real life and real challenges.

🔹 Experiments in Meditation – Weekly contemplative etudes to develop and refine meditation in the lab of direct experience and personal practice.

🔹 Recorded Yin Yoga Practices – Self-paced Yin sessions for embodied inquiry.

🔹 Woven Frameworks – Integrating Integral Theory (Growing Up, Cleaning Up, Waking Up, Showing Up, Opening Up) with the Five Elements of Chinese Medicine.

🔹 A Practice Lab Approach – A space for ongoing learning, refinement, and creative exploration.

This isn’t about chasing some final state of enlightenment. It’s about process. It’s about living practice—meeting life as it is, refining our understanding, and returning to the basics, again and again.

If that resonates, I’d love for you to join me.
